前言“楚塞三湘接，荆门九派通。江流天地外，山色有无中。”王维寥寥数语道出楚山的横亘绵延，汉水的浩渺接天。作为中原与南方接壤的富庶之地，荆楚大地自古山川秀美，人杰地灵。从云梦古泽到鱼米之乡，荆楚文化生生不息，构成华夏文化的重要组成部分。荆楚文化，又称荆文化或楚文化，可追溯至商周乃至更早时期，是指由长江中游南方民族所创之文化。荆、楚之称谓已历经三千余年，*早与树木相关，后用于指代地方及国名。《说文解字》（卷一）有云，“荆，楚木也。从艸刑聲”。《康熙字典》[申集上][艸字部]对“荆”字的溯源指出，《说文》释“荆”为“楚木也”，《本草》释“荆”为“牡荆”，有“注”曰，“古者刑杖以荆，故字从刑，其生成丛而疏爽，故又谓之楚……荆楚之地，因多产此而名也”。据《康熙字典》，此字亦为州名。如《尚书·禹贡》释“荆州”为“荆及衡阳惟荆州”，意为荆州“北据荆山，南及衡山之阳”（唐颜师古解）。此字亦为山名，《后汉·郡国志》中曰“南郡临沮有荆山”，有注云“卞和抱璞之处”。先秦文献中，荆、楚互通。清华大学藏战国楚竹简《楚居》载，夏朝末年，楚人先祖季连部族南迁荆山，其后人穴熊之妻难产，不得已破腹取女，母死，巫医遂用当地山上盛产之楚草，亦称荆草，缝合并包裹其身体后下葬。后为纪念这位母亲，族名定为楚。《说文解字》中亦释楚为“丛木也，一名荆也”。《春秋左传正义》中有云，“荆，楚本号，后改为楚”，“正义曰：荆、楚一木二名，故以为国号亦得二名。终庄公之世，经皆书荆。僖之元年，乃书楚人伐郑，盖于尔时始改为楚，以后常称楚也”。现在荆楚文化被用于指涉在荆楚大地上不断传承嬗变、源远流长的文化。它始于炎帝的推行农业耕种，神农的尝百草医疾病；兴于春秋战国时楚国所创的800余年辉煌文明；历经秦汉三国时期政治、经济、军事、外交上的风云巨变。从精神成就上而言，荆楚文化体现于立足楚地民俗、极富浪漫色彩的楚辞；产生于江汉湘潇之间“以自然为主，以谦逊为宗”的道家学说；发展于崇尚哲理与思辨的先秦老庄学派，两汉荆州新学，南北朝至隋唐的佛学及近代新学。凡此种种构成了追求自然、平等包容、重义理、善思辨的荆楚文化的精神内涵。荆楚文化同样见之于物质成就。历史建筑作为文化载体，见证和体现着荆楚大地的历史变迁。“人事有代谢，往来成古今。江山留胜迹，我辈复登临。”在那一座座古老的城墙古寨、塔楼桥梁、古寺道观、书院文庙、宫殿楼阁、祠堂会馆中，我们感受远古的神农文化、极具民族特色的巴土文化、蕴含着浪漫神秘传说和奇特风土人情的三峡文化、作为激烈古战场遗址的三国文化、驰名中外的佛教与道教文化，体验着北方以黄帝为始祖、以儒家思想为主导的文化与南方楚地以炎帝为始祖、以道家思想为主导的文化的碰撞与交融。在近现代建筑如起义纪念馆、教堂、洋行、医院、西式学堂中，我们跟随着荆楚大地上的先辈，置身于辛亥革命、汉口开埠的实景，感受推翻了清王朝统治的首义文化，体验着汉口开埠后西洋文化在荆楚大地的传播，封建制度的终结，新兴中国的崛起以及荆楚地方文化对外来文化的接受和重构。地域上四通八达，地势上集崇山峻岭、丘陵平原于一身，文化上既有自身独特之处，又能集采众家之长，这是荆楚文化的特色，也是荆楚建筑文化的特色。汇聚了中原建筑的古朴雄浑，江南建筑的雅致灵秀，西部建筑的少数民族风情和东部海派、徽派建筑特色，加上19世纪末20世纪初开埠通商所接受的西洋文化的影响，荆楚历史建筑呈现出一体多元、兼收并蓄的文化风格。在时代发展日新月异、新旧思想碰撞更迭的年代，要理解自己所生存于其中的文化之属性，判断其发展之走向，必须首先立足于对该文化发生之根源及其发展之轨迹的洞悉和理解。荆楚历史建筑是文化的载体，记录着鲜活的历史记忆。登临历史胜迹，考察探究特定年代特定风格建筑的构造，有助于人们置身于独特的历史情境和文化发展时期，对其时其境其文化内涵获得真切的理解与感悟。这既是文化传承的需要，文化发扬与传播的需要，也是文化发展的需要。本书撷取颇具代表性的荆楚历史建筑，包括建于三国时期的古城如荆州古城、襄阳古隆中等，建于隋唐以来的寺庙、佛塔、道观如宝通寺、归元寺、武当山古建筑群等，始建于汉、后于历代修复重建的问津书院，建于明清的宗祠如利川大水井等，建于清末民初的仿欧式建筑如汉口租界建筑、昙华林建筑群以及中西合璧式建筑如武汉大学早期建筑等，以照片、文字为主要表现形式，从其所处方位、历史沿革、文化背景、建筑构造风格特色、相关历史典故等方面进行梳理、描述和介绍，力图使本书起到推动荆楚建筑文化的对外传播、更好地普及和弘扬荆楚文化灵魂和神韵的作用。本书在编写过程中，查阅并参考了众多相关资料，在此对前辈学人做出的贡献表示衷心的感谢！张莉2022年8月
