现代康复医学起源于 20 世纪 40 — 50 年代，那时的世界正处于动 荡期，战争及其随后爆发的各类疾病给人类带来了巨大的伤害！即使医 务人员全力救治，也只能留住病伤者的生命，大量生存者遗留了各种身 心方面的功能障碍，严重影响了病、伤、残者的生活自理及其回归家庭 和社会。因此，医疗先驱们在救治病伤员的同时，开始关注救治对象的 功能恢复和改善，并积极尝试采用不同的治疗方法，以期限度地帮 助病伤者回归家庭和社区。为此，催生了一门新的临床医学学科——康 复医学（rehabilitation medicine）。
进入 21 世纪以来，随着全球经济的发展，国际康复医学进入了发 展的“快车道”，与临床各学科相互渗透、融合，涉及几乎所有疾病的 全过程，从发病早期就介入的重症康复，到疾病恢复期的社区康复和居 家康复，以及生命终结期的康复（国内称之为“临终关怀”），可谓全生命周期的覆盖了。
