He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest-paid author during the 1930s. Their chief tie was the disapprovalthey shared of the men who spent their days and nights in the smoking-room playing poker or bridge and drinking. Mrs Macphail was not alittle flattered to think that she and her husband were the only people on board with whom the Davidsons were willing to associate, and even the doctor, shy but no fool, half unconsciously acknowledged the compliment.
