益昉先生嘱我作序。诚如书名《好医生是如何炼成的—医学名家论“病·人”》，我作序旨在解（xiè）开“病人”，解（jiě）读“病人”。这也应该是本书的命题和主题。
疾病怎么能与人体分开呢？人生了病，病长在人身上。但谁都知道，同样一种病，在不同人身上，就会有不同的表现。我们教书或指导年轻医师时会强调：教科书上描述的“典型”表现，在临床实践中是“不典型”者。书上或文献上通常讲手术或者治疗的适应证和禁忌证，是说某种疾病适应或禁忌于某种手术或某种治疗。但实际上，也失之偏颇，因为这里只考虑了病与法这两个因素，而且只是“物”；还有两个因素，即医生和病人，此乃重要的两个“人”！完整的叙述和实施是：这位病人罹患的这种病是否适合这个医生和其给予的医法。只有四个因素完全契合才是的选择和适应证，若有一项不适合，都应作出调整和更换。
这便是病与人的分别，这种分别考虑不是将其割裂，而是将其周全弥合。这便是我们行医、做事、为人的三原则：通天理、近人情、达国法—对于我们，天理者，就是疾病的发生、发展规律与过程；人情者，就是病人的思想、感情、意愿与要求、家庭与社会背景等；国法者，上至国家法令政策，下至疾病的诊治原则、规范、技术路线、方法与技巧等。这也正是医疗实践与医学研究的科学性和人文性。因此，本书的书名独具新意，本书的内容源其根本。
如果将道理简单化，则如英国著名手术大师维克托·邦尼（Victor Bonney）所说：我们都好比是裁缝，但我们不能定做制服，而是要量体裁衣。
因此，我们将根据不同的人，给予其适合的诊断与治疗，适合的，就是好的。正是：好的选择是初的选择，初的选择是好的选择（The best choice is the first choice. The first choice is the best choice.）。当然，这里是仁慈与关爱、哲学与理念，没有技术傲慢、没有金钱傲慢、没有权力傲慢。
仔细推敲书的内容是令人振奋的，广泛而深入，似可以囊括为九大类（九为大也）：现今与历史、西医与中医、实践与研究、临床与教学、医德与医术、文学与艺术、工夫与理念、洗浴与影像、男人与女人。所以，不仅是编辑、书写起来，而且阅读、琢磨起来，也一定是兴趣盎然、舒展酣然，却也必定是耐人寻味、寓意深长。
纵观我们的作者群，也同样令人振奋：他们有经验丰富的临床医学专家、有优秀的医院管理者、有知识渊博的人文学者、有造诣高深的基础医学家……大家把目光、笔端聚焦到病与人的命题上，把关爱、温暖送到病人心里。
完成这本书的编写，我们更加深刻地理解了伟大医学教育家威廉·奥斯勒（William Osler）的话，他说：好的医师治疗疾病，伟大的医师治疗患有疾病的人。因此，作者作为医生的敬畏之心与日俱增：我们要敬畏生命，生命属于每个人，只有一次而已；我们要敬畏病人，他们把生命交给我们，是我们好的老师；敬畏医学，这是未知数多的瀚海，要穷其一生去探索；敬畏自然，我们要遵循规律，顺应自然。
医生真是一个让人熬尽心血的职业啊！因为，我们不仅要探寻疾病的奥秘，还要全身心体察和关爱病人。
