在她们的带动下，越来越多的人开始从事软装工作。
直到软装势力开始抢建筑师的生意了，建筑师们才发现不对劲，他们认为这股软装势力需要被制止和压抑。因此，在美国有很长一段时间内，建筑师和软装设计师处于水火不相容的状态。那时候还没有室内设计师（Interior Designer）的称谓，这个群体被称为软装设计师（Interior Decorator）。原因是在那个阶段，室内设计师还不会做像现在这么完整的服务，只是停留在布料、摆饰品的搭配上。直到设计师开始像建筑师一样提供完整的设计图纸、效果图、灯光设计后，才逐渐被称为室内设计师。这大概是整个室内设计的发展过程，由软装逐渐演变成室内设计专业。（在我们中国，我个人觉得这个程序是倒着走的：先有了室内设计服务，十年内，软装服务越来越趋于独立，有了变成一种分类服务的倾向。）
