1960年生于日本和歌山县。就读京都工艺纤维大学研究所硕士班时由中村昌生老师指导。东京大学工学博士。现职为京都建筑专门学校第二部及传统建筑研究科教师及大学兼任讲师。一级建筑师、茶名宗邦。著书有《近代的茶室与数寄屋》（淡交社）、《近代京都研究》、《民俗建筑大事典》、《茶之汤的铭大百科》、《图解木造建筑事典》等。论文有〈大正期的杂志内刊载之茶室论点的走向──迈向现代主义的茶室论点研究〉、〈关于红叶馆与星冈──1880年代的数寄屋〉等。

在茶道空间中，有墙、窗、床之间、顶棚、榻榻米、地炉、躙口、露地等重要的要素， 但是， 这些元素只是进行茶室设计时所需要的“器皿”的一部分。也就是说，茶道空间是由那些元素包围而成的，本质上则是在周围营造出“什么也没有”的地方。而“什么也没有”的表现方式，就是要利用墙壁、床之间等元素。并
且，茶道是招待客人的一种以形表意的方式， 所以这个“什么也没有”的地方，
追根究底是人的心意。
