让作者惴惴不安的是,本书当时仓促成篇,按照原打算,拟在初版后利用较长时间,广泛听取各方面的意见,再花三五年功夫修订原书。初步设想是将原书上、下编独立开来,形成《唐代园林述论》和《唐别业考》两部系列著作。但变化永远比计划快,此次因出版社规定修订时限,作者只能对原书的史料及文字误讹进行一些增删订正,另补充了相关的部分图版,但基本观点和结构一仍其旧,系统全面的研究只能留俟将来。
此次修订,作者将近年来寓目的园林史和隋唐文史研究新成果尽量吸收进去,并且做了标注,以继古人“言必称先,不敢掠美”之例。惟一遗憾的是,作者曾从台北《中国唐代学会会刊》索引中查到侯迺慧教授在台湾政治大学的博士论文题目《唐代文人的园林生活——以全唐诗文呈现为主》,台大教授萧丽华博士屡与津梁,将作者介绍给侯教授,因作者近两年又忙于另一项课题,暂时中断了对唐代园林的研究,故不克及时与侯教授联系,没有能拜读并参考她的创获。但海峡两岸,灵犀一点,作者们能不约而同地跳入壶中开地,做一番逍遥游,这本身就是一种大机缘。侯教授一鞭,定当有以教作者,谨以这一修订本向侯教授及海内外探研壶秘的同道求教。
