《吞噬危机》是一套关于人类发展史的丛书，以时间为轴，分别讲述人类与天花、鼠疫、黄热病，与流感、疟疾、艾滋病这几大人类发展史上的杀手的病毒的抗争历史，本丛书共三册，本书为部。本书讲述了在人类与细菌、病毒等微生物共存的漫长历史中，与他们时而共生、时而对抗的关系。尤其展现了人类在面对一次次猛烈的大瘟疫、流行病中，所作出的努力及受到的教训。在这场漫长而没有硝烟的战役中，人类世界涌现了一代代超凡卓越的科学家们，在他们光辉的成绩背后又有许多不为人知、令人动容的故事。本书是一部宏观的人类与细菌、病毒世界的关系史。
