自2014年，特别是2017年中国医师节设立以来，在“8.19”医师节那天或前后，上海青年医学科普能力大赛（简称“青科赛”）都会如期举行决赛，进行对决，参赛者的风采或新闻瞬间在上海医学界，特别是青年医生中“霸屏”。正如上海市医学会会长徐建光教授所说，在健康中国建设的征程上，医学科普是提高公众健康素养的必要手段，医务工作者责无旁贷、矢志不渝、薪火相传。
如今持续八年的“青科赛”，参与其中的医务人员逾万人，不少初涉科普领域的年轻医务人员脱颖而出，之后不断探索，取得了累累硕果。不少知名专家身先士卒，带领团队投身科普，在另一个战场取得骄人的战绩，成绩斐然。“青科赛”从初赛、复赛到决赛，一般要持续半年左右的时间，一大批年轻的医务人员在繁忙的医、教、研之余进行科普探索与实践，哭过、笑过，迟疑过、彷徨过，被误解、被埋怨，有的坚持走到后，有的半途而废……如何让科普的种子在青年医务人员心中生根发芽，再开花结果，这一直是上海市医学会及科普专科分会思考和努力的方向。与此同时，随着党的十九大及一系列重大会议的召开，健康中国战略全面实施，《健康中国行动（2019—2030）》颁布，健康知识普及行动全面启动，医学科普工作受到前所未有的重视，医药卫生行业之外，科学技术协会、科学技术委员会等机构给予更多的指导与支持。全面梳理医学科普工作的历史与现状、发展与趋势，让医学科普成为更多专业人员服务社会、提升能力等的有效手段，更显其紧迫性与必要性。
鉴于此，上海市医学会科普专科分会与上海市科普作家协会、上海市健康促进中心、复旦大学医学科普研究所等积极组织科普名家高手，策划推出了这本《医学科普基础与实践》。全面梳理科普的历史与现状、医学科普作用与趋势，并从现今社会流行的科普形式入手，提炼出科普创作的“硬核”知识与技能，或是专家多年科普实践的肺腑之言，抑或是其不断探索的经验总结。本书可以作为从事科普专业或把科普作为兴趣爱好的启蒙读本，也可以作为医疗机构推动科普的参考书。本书还邀请到上海市护理学会、上海市药学会、上海市预防医学会的专家等参与撰稿，相关专业人员也可以参考使用。
一本并非高精尖的图书，参与编写者人数达到50余位，遍及医学界、出版界、媒体界、医药护理预防领域、健康教育与促进领域、新闻宣传与管理领域等。基于写作者在医学科普相应领域的思考、实践与对现今社会科普需求的关注、重视，在呈现上，尽可能避免专业图书的板着面孔说教的“严谨”，体现了专业知识的提炼与实操性表达，如易学、易记的“三个关键”“四个要点”“五个不要”等。由于是多位专家共同撰稿，有几位不得不舍弃鲜明的个性化，改写成大致统一的风格。鉴于时间的关系，本书尚在专业、编写等方面存在一定不足，请读者不吝赐教。
