犹如一个巨大的建筑化石群
山西郭裕村始建于唐，战乱和煤铁经营使它成为一个富裕的杂姓村落。明末清初，它的商业经济、文化和科第仕途均达到了高潮，建造了一批质量相当好的官宦和商人住宅，及众多宗教和公共文化建筑。还有在战乱中为自保举村之力修造高大坚固的城墙、城门，即“郭峪堡”。这一座座完整的民宅深院、宏伟的城垣和历史的种种遗存，犹如一个巨大的建筑化石群，陈列在后人的眼前，为我们研究晋南地区历史的发展，提供了不可多得的活态实例。

李秋香，清华大学建筑学院高级工程师，1989年起从事乡土建筑的研究及传统村落的保护工作。主要专著有《新叶村》、《中国村居》、《石桥村》、《丁村乡土建筑》、《闽西客家古村落——培田》、《川南古镇——尧坝场》、《高椅村》、《郭峪村》、《流坑村》、《十里铺》等，主编乡土瑰宝系列书籍《宗祠》、《庙宇》、《文教建筑》、《住宅》（上、下）和《村落》等。

乡土建筑是乡土生活的舞台和物质环境，它也是乡土文化普遍存在的、信息含量的组成部分。它的综合度，紧密联系着许多其他乡土文化要素或者甚至是它们重要的载体。不研究乡土建筑就不能完整地认识乡土文化。甚至可以说，乡土建筑研究是乡土文化系统研究的基础。
乡土建筑当然也是中国传统建筑朴实、真率、生活化、富有人情味的一部分。它们不仅有很高的历史文化的认识价值，对建筑工作者来说，还可能有一些直接的借鉴价值。没有乡土建筑的中国建筑史也是残缺不全的。
