碛口，作为黄河边上的枢纽，一度是秦晋大峡谷沿崖七百公里的*镇。和晋中地区相似，繁荣的商业文化也造就了这里发达的建筑和世俗文化。本书作者经四年的田野研究，寻访测绘了大量的有价值、有代表性的建筑，并访问耆老，搜集史料，以生动的文字、精美的图片向读者展现了一幅生动的古碛口的历史文化画卷，是研究中国古建筑、古村落的珍贵资料。

李秋香，清华大学建筑学院高级工程师，1989年起从事乡土建筑的研究及传统村落的保护工作。主要专著有《新叶村》、《中国村居》、《石桥村》、《丁村乡土建筑》、《闽西客家古村落——培田》、《川南古镇——尧坝场》、《高椅村》、《郭峪村》、《流坑村》、《十里铺》等，主编乡土瑰宝系列书籍《宗祠》、《庙宇》、《文教建筑》、《住宅》（上、下）和《村落》等。
陈志华，1952年毕业于建筑系，留校任教，直至1989年退休。主要专著有《外国建筑史》《外国造园艺术》《北窗杂记》《意大利古建筑散记》《外国古建筑二十讲》等，还编译了《保护文物建筑和历史地段的国际文献》《现代西方建筑美学文选》等书。1989年起从事中国乡土建筑的调查与研究，与楼庆西、李秋香共同成立“乡土建筑研究组”，出版《中华遗产．乡土建筑》系列丛书和《中国乡土建筑初探》等著作。
罗德胤，现任清华大学建筑学院副教授， 2003年博士毕业，主要从事传统聚落与乡土建筑的研究工作，完成多个课题，开设“乡土建筑学”“乡土聚落研究”等课程。主持全国范围内的村落保护发展项目数十个，已出版著作有《蔚县古堡》《仙霞古道》《清湖码头》等。

乡土建筑是乡土生活的舞台和物质环境，它也是乡土文化普遍存在的、信息含量的组成部分。它的综合度，紧密联系着许多其他乡土文化要素或者甚至是它们重要的载体。不研究乡土建筑就不能完整地认识乡土文化。甚至可以说，乡土建筑研究是乡土文化系统研究的基础。
乡土建筑当然也是中国传统建筑朴实、真率、生活化、富有人情味的一部分。它们不仅有很高的历史文化的认识价值，对建筑工作者来说，还可能有一些直接的借鉴价值。没有乡土建筑的中国建筑史也是残缺不全的。
