*国建筑之原始，究起自何时，殆将永远笼罩于史前之玄秘中。“上古穴居而野处，后世圣人易之以宫室，上栋下宇，以蔽风雨”(注一)。此固为后世之推测，然其所说穴居之习，固无疑义，直至今日，河南、山西一带居民，穴居仍极普遍。宫室与穴居可以同时并存，未必前后相替也。

中国建筑之原始，究起自何时，殆将永远笼罩于史前之玄秘中。“上古穴居而野处，后世圣人易之以宫室，上栋下宇，以蔽风雨”(注一)。此固为后世之推测，然其所说穴居之习，固无疑义，直至今日，河南、山西一带居民，穴居仍极普遍。宫室与穴居可以同时并存，未必前后相替也。
殷商以前，史难置信，姑集所记。黄帝(公元前二十七世纪顷?)，“邑于涿鹿之阿，迁徙往来无常处，以师兵为营卫”，当时显然未有固定之城郭宫室(注二)。至尧之时(公元前二十三世纪顷?)，则“堂崇三尺，茅茨不翦”(注二)，后世虽以此颂尧之俭德，实亦可解为当时技术之简拙。至舜所居，则“一年成聚，二年成邑，三年成都”(注二)。舜“宾于四门，四门穆穆”，初期之都市已开始形成。“禹卑宫室，致费于沟减”(注三)，则因宫室已渐华侈，然后可以“卑”之。
至殷代末年(公元前十二世纪顷)，纣王广作宫室，益广囿苑，‘‘南距朝歌，北据邯郸及沙丘，皆为离宫别馆”(注四)。然周武王革命之后，已全部被毁。箕子自朝鲜“朝周，过殷墟，感宫室毁坏生禾黍”而伤之(注五)。其后约三千年，乃由中央研究院历史语言研究所予以发掘，发现若干建筑遗址。其中有多数土筑殿基，上置大石卵柱础，行列井然。柱础之上，且有覆以铜板者。其中若干处之木柱之遗炭尚宛然存在，盖兵乱中所焚毁也。除殿基外，尚有门屋，水沟等遗址在。
