本书通过对中国太极星象村俞源的50多幅古民居壁画进行进行系统研究，介绍了俞源村及其姓氏来源，俞源村古民居，壁画的空间布局、样式、特点及不同题材壁画释义等方面内容；从生活美学、壁画艺术的角度出发，将艺术作品与地方历史人文、民俗文化相结合进行研究。
吴剑梅，丽水职业技术学院副教授，浙江省美术家协会会员、省油画家协会会员，长期从事绘画创作及理论研究。油画创作“畲乡风情系列”“花卉系列”等作品多次入选省市各级画展。主持及参与省课题“浙派古民居壁画调查研究”“中国太极星象村古民居壁画研究”“浙西南民间信仰中的驱邪巫画研究”等九项，出版专著《浙西南古民居》。
鲍仕才，浙江省武义博物馆副馆长、副研究员，中国博物馆协会会员，长期从事地域文化和文博理论研究。发表《论博物馆个性化定位和实践探索》等论文二十余篇，负责并参与“中国太极星象村古民居壁画研究”“浙派古民居壁画调查研究” 等省市级课题四项，出版《宣平地方文化丛书》（民间故事卷）、《延福寺志》。

俞源村来源
浙江武义县俞源村是中国的太极星象村，也是江南俞姓聚居名村，因其独特的仿太极星宿的建筑格局、保存丰富的地域民俗文化以及周围秀丽的山水景色而闻名遐迩，成为首批中国历史文化名村和文物重点保护单位。
关于俞源村的来历有一些说法，一说南宋时期的俞姓始祖俞德往返八婺之间，因钟爱俞源山水而择地定居。二说很是神奇！据坊间传说，俞德病逝，其子俞义护柩回杭，途经朱颜村夜宿，次日见紫藤缠棺，以此为奇迹，遂停棺入葬，并留下守墓，对于这个说法也没有确切的考证。根据多处史料记载，俞德确为俞源村俞氏家族的世祖，王文政先生在《中国历史文化名村俞源俞族续谱·序》中说“自宋末俞源俞氏始祖俞德自武林徙于此”；俞氏后裔俞松发在《松楼笛韵》中也叙“从明洪武开始的文字记载，都说俞德爱九龙山水之胜而创居之”。在《武义县志》（1986—2005）中也有佐证：“俞源俞氏始祖俞德，字处约，祖籍武林（杭州），据传，在南宋末年仕松阳教谕，宋末元初因避乱，率家仆居九龙山下，从此代代繁衍，日益兴旺。”除了传说之外，还有现藏于武义县博物馆内的两通墓碑 , 亦能为俞源俞姓源起提供证据。一为俞处约之子俞庭坚所撰的俞处约铭文；一为俞处约之父俞梦椿铭文，为俞处约及其兄等所撰。在这两通碑上，记载了墓主的姓氏名号、生卒年月和迁徙至武义的情况、生平事略，研究者断定，墓主就是武义俞源俞氏之祖。
俞氏先祖至俞源村后以教学、务农为生，从南宋至今，已经历 750 年，计31 代。其中五世祖俞涞在俞氏家族的发展中具有重要的作用，现今在俞源村传承下来的均是俞涞的后代，而俞涞两兄弟的支脉仅延续了很短的一段时间。其中俞汪传 8 代，俞浪传 16 代。俞源村从明代起，其主姓就以俞姓为主，大约占八成，其次是李姓、董姓等一些人数很少的姓氏。
自俞姓始祖迁居俞源村休养生息，族人开始各自择地建屋、经营主业，后经过不同时期的拓展建造了大批的建筑，形成了俞源村庞大的古建筑群规模。早年间俞氏家族的房屋多建在村东北部，当地百姓俗称其为中宅片、下宅片。族人大多以外向型农耕经济为主业，经营田产租赁、经商等。现留存的多为清代古民居，体量大，庭院开阔，构建装饰较精美，壁画留存量大。而位于西南地块的前宅片初住民以李氏宗族为主，他们主要经营药店、商铺等内向型经济产业。前宅片如今仍留有明代建筑，建筑体量较小，木结构简约，屋内装饰较素朴，较多房屋连廓相通，书院、养老轩、香火厅等公共建筑功能较多，壁画遗留不多。如今，俞源村现存古建筑 395 幢及堂楼、厅、阁、院、馆、祠、庙等遗迹，其中宋代的洞主庙、元代的利涉桥、明代的古戏台，均名扬四方。村中迎玩堂和清代知县题赠的万春堂“惠及行旅”匾额都证明了俞源村悠久的历史。
