后来孩子们死了，他也得了麻风病。在失明的时候在墙上完成了一幅力作。土著妻子埋葬了他，并且遵照他的遗愿，把他的遗作予以销毁，尽管主人公惋惜不已。而主人公也在他的绘画中理解了他的追求。

Of Human Bondage is the first and most autobiographical of Maugham?s masterpieces. It is the story of Philip Carey, an orphan eager for life, love and adventure.
After a few months studying in Heidelberg, and a brief spell in Paris as would-be artist, Philip settles in London to train as a doctor.
And that is where he meets Mildred, the loud but irresistible waitress with whom he plunges into a formative, tortured and affair which very nearly ruins him.

William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and lived in Paris until he was ten.
He was educated at King School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University. He spent some time at St. Thomas' Hospital with the idea of practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to literature.
Of Human Bondage, the first of his masterpieces, came out in 1915, and with the publication in 1919 of The Moon and Sixpence his reputation as a novelist was established.
At the same time his fame as a successful playwright and writer was being consolidated with acclaimed productions of various plays and the publication of several short story collections.
His other works include travel books, essays, criticism and the autobiographical The Summing Up and A Writer's Notebook.
In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965
